Asian Longhorned Tick

Another invasive tick species is here. Moses Cucura of Suffolk County Tick Control Advisory Committee (TCAC) recently shared with us his updated research about Asian longhorned tick on Long Island. Here’s what you need to know:

•Native to East Asia, it appeared in the US in 2013 in New Jersey

•As of 2023 it’s been observed in every LI township

•Reproduces rapidly through parthenogenesis (asexually)

•Nymphs quest in clumps and adults move aggressively, similar to lonestar tick

•Mainly stalks pastures and feeds on cattle/livestock, not as likely to seek out human hosts

•No human disease pathogens have been associated with it in the US however in other countries it has transmitted dangerous viruses and bacteria to humans

We will continue to monitor the advancement of Asian longhorned tick and update you as it develops. Contact us today with your tick questions and learn about our organic tick control programs.
