Freeze Damage Alert
It looks like some of winter’s chill has followed us into spring! From February through April, temperatures have swung between the 20s and 50s week after week. While we may finally be headed toward more stable weather, some ornamental trees and shrubs have taken a bit of a beating.
Many broadleaf evergreens across Long Island are showing signs of freeze damage—like browning spreading leaf tips, often clustered in clumps, as seen in the photo above. These symptoms can continue to appear over the coming weeks as plants react to earlier stress.
Commonly affected plants include:
• Laurel
• Rhododendron
• Hydrangea
• Boxwood
• Holly
• Euonymus
• Southern Magnolia
The good news? A healthy plant in good soil can typically bounce back from some leaf loss without serious concern. However, if a plant is also facing other stress factors, it might need fertilization or additional care to recover.
